Laura Mae Whaler-Bird was born on November 18th, 1941 in Tahlequah, OK at the old Hastings Hospital, the daughter of Wattie and Ella Mae (Thompson) Whaler. She attended  Sequoyah Vocational School in the mid 1950s.

In May of 1959, she married the love of her life and her best friend, Jay Dee Bird. Together they shared years of love, laughter and raised two sons, Willard and Dewayne. Laura worked as a Nurses Aide and Home Health Caregiver. She loved her clients and went out of her way to give them the very best of care.

She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother. She spent her home time sewing and making beautiful quilts. She enjoyed slipping away for a day spent fishing or looking at antique cars. She could make you feel right at home when she went to the kitchen and made her dumplings and raisin pie.

A Christian by faith, she faithfully attended the Illinois River Baptist Church, and she lived her faith daily. Laura always made herself available to sing in the choir, to teach Vacation Bible School, teach Sunday School or to do whatever else was asked of her. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a kind and loving heart. Her Bible was pulled out daily, and studied. She was the loving friend and grandmother that was always happy to see you, hear of your days activities and support you in all that you did. She was so very proud of her 8 grand and 28 great grandchildren. They were her pride and joy. She gave so much to others and proved her love daily.

The Lord called this good and faithful servant home from her labors on Tuesday, July 12th, 2016 in Tahlequah with all of her loved ones gathered close by her side. She was 74 years old. She leaves an empty space in our hearts that will never be filled.

She has gone home to be with her grandparents, Ketcher and Laura Thompson and Kanuchi Whaler and his wife, her parents, and two brothers: Archie and JW Whaler.

Those left to cherish her blessed memory include her husband of 57 years Jay Dee Bird of the home, and her two sons, Willard Dean and wife Reba Bird of Watts and Dewayne Bird of the home. She leaves one sister, Susie Whaler of Lawton and one brother, Harold Whaler and wife Betty of Colcord.

Her legacy of life lives on in her eight grandchildren: Brent Sands and wife Paula of Welling, Kristie Keen and husband Garlin of Proctor, Kendra Mitchell and companion Chris Thrailkill of Chewey, Stephanie Womack and husband Kevin of Westville, Byron Sands and wife Brendon of Chewey, Deanna Bird and companion Jason Turner of West Siloam Springs, Donnie Bird and wife Stacy of Chewey, and Narcie Bird and companion Ronson Webster of Chewey. She also leave s 28 great grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and loved ones too numerous to mention.
