Sequoyah  HS ~ BOARD OF EDUCATION
Brenda Walker
Seq-Board-of Education-1988-2001     TAHLEQUAH, Ok -- Brenda June Walker, the daughter of Johnny and Theresa Walker and granddaughter of Agnes Walker, was born on August 26, 1955 in McAlester, Oklahoma. She passed away peacefully at the Brookdale Assisted Living Center in Muskogee, Oklahoma, on March 8, 2018, at the age of 62 years, 6 months and 10 days.

Brenda attended Sequoyah Elementary School and Tahlequah Junior and Senior High Schools. After graduating from Northeastern State University in 1977, she returned to the Junior High as a ninth grade science teacher, spending her entire teaching career in that position.

Brenda was devoted to both her students and to science education. With Brenda's encouragement, many of her students participated in the Oklahoma Science and Engineering Fair and the Oklahoma Junior Academy of Science, always bringing home awards. She was particularly interested in aeronautics. Her students looked forward each year to the springtime when Miss Walker's unit on rockets culminated in a day outside shooting their model rockets into the sky.

Brenda retired from teaching in 2006, but she stayed interested and active in education through her membership and work in the Cherokee County Retired Educators Association and the Oklahoma Retired Educators Association.

Brenda was a devoted daughter and granddaughter and proud of her Creek and Cherokee heritage. She served for several years on the Sequoyah High School Board of Education (1988-2001) and on the Cherokee Election Board Committee.

Brenda was adored by her students, respected by her colleagues, and loved by her friends. The last few years of her life were challenging, but she met that challenge with grace, dignity, and always a sense of humor. She will be truly missed by those who knew here.
