CHEROKEE, NC -- Soldier E. Sanders , (Seq. Class of 1938) 88, of the Wolftown community, died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2007, at the V.A. Medical Center in Asheville, after a period of declining health.
He was born in St. Adair County, Okla., and had lived in Cherokee since 1960. He retired from the BIA and Sequoyah Indian School , and had worked in Maggie Valley as the postmaster. He was a POW escapee/evadee during World War II, while serving in the U.S. Army Air Force. He was the son of the late Tim and Lydia Buzzard Sanders.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Emma Catherine Blythe Sanders; two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen Sanders Wren Peterson and Melvin A. Jr., of Augusta, Ga., and Faren Sanders Crews and Dennis L., of Shellman Bluff, Ga.; two sons and daughters-in-law, James E. "Butch" Sanders and Janet C., of Cherokee, and William D. "Bill" Sanders and Eileen S., of Lemoore, Calif.; sister, Frances Sanders; four grandchildren, M.A. Pete Peterson III, Lori C. Sanders, Catherine Blythe Winchester, M.D., and James E. Sanders III; and four great-grandchildren, Samuel Rhodes Peterson, Maxwell Seymour Peterson, Sayre Soldier Coffey and Jacob Alexsander Sanders.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Cherokee United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Steve Phillippi, Jeff Ramsland and Bo Parris officiating.
Burial will be in Sanders Family Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army and Steve Youngdeer VFW Post 8013.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church.
