Lemuel Sanders 1972     TAHLEQUAH, Ok -- Funeral services for Charles Lemuel Sanders , 90, of Tahlequah, Oklahoma were held Tuesday, September 16, 2014, in the Green Country Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating was L.B. Wildcat (Seq. Class of 1965) . Pallbearers were Derek Kirk, Jerry Sanders, Monty Sanders, Taylor Sanders, Robert Sanders, and Johnathan Worth. Honorary pallbearers were Billy Dowling, Nick Baker, Dean Markham, Scott Sanders, and George Parker. Interment followed in the Tahlequah City Cemetery.

    Charles Lemuel Sanders was born March 29, 1924, in Proctor, Oklahoma, to Charles William Sanders and Jessie Othello (Starr) Sanders. He passed away on September 11, 2014, at his home in Tahlequah.

    Charles was born in the Community of Christie in Cherokee County. He attended Christie School until he transferred to Sequoyah Orphan Training School where he finished high school with the Class of 1945. After graduation he went to work at Sequoyah then known as Sequoyah Vocational School as a property clerk and he was also the bus driver to away ball games and other student trips. He was an employee from 1947 until retirement in about 1979. He was a life long Sequoyah Indian.

    On July 15, 1953, he married Jacqueline Lewis in Tahlequah, together they shared 61 years of marriage.

   He was an avid golfer and helped build the Sequoyah Golf Course now known as Cherokee Trails. He golfed every day until his health prevented him from doing so. Charles was the last of the original golf team “The Tribe” which began playing together at Sequoyah High School in the 1960's. Charles enjoyed the social life of the golf course. He also had a community baseball team and played in a city league.

    He loved baseball and his favorite team was the Cardinals, he also enjoyed watching football, fishing, gardening and bird feeding.

    Charles was preceded in death by his son, Charles William Sanders; ten brothers and sisters, Martin Sanders, Arthur "Judd" Sanders (Seq. 2nd grd 1947). Susie Raines, Calvin Sanders, Cherokee Violet Hull, Robert Sanders (Seq. Class of 1951), Joseph Sanders (Seq. Class of 1949), Charlotte Cone, Chrystal Butler and Louisa Swake;

    He is survived by his wife Jacqueline (Lewis) Sanders of the home; his children, Michael Sanders and wife Kathleen of Coweta, OK, Cheryl Sanders of Dallas, TX, Lucretia Kirk and husband Kenny of Proctor, OK, Darrell Sanders of Tahlequah, OK, and Jerry Sanders of Cleveland, OK; a sister, Jessie Sanders Skrzypczak (Seq. Class of 1948) ; fifteen grandchildren, Steed, Joshua, Gracie, Loretta, Ruth, Joseph, Caroline, Steven, Jerry Lee, Taylor, Rachel, Kasi, Johnathan, Jennifer, and Derek; great grandchildren, Payton, Tatum, Carson, Lilly, Kyle, Brandon, Aubrey, Lyla, Nathan, and Colton; and many extended family members, friends and loved ones. Lem was a good man, good to his family, and will be dearly missed by all.
