James  Marvin  Noley
Sequoyah  HS ~ NSU Student 1950s

James Marvin Noley     WILBURTON, Ok --  James Marvin Noley , 77, of Wilburton, died Thursday, May 29, 2014, at Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center in Poteau. Funeral services were Monday at Choctaw Nation Community Center in Wilburton with the Rev. Willard Francis officiating. Burial was at Centerpoint Cemetery in Wilburton.

Marvin was not a student at Sequoyah but came to our campus as one of a dozen BIA scholarship students attending Northeastern State University in Tahlequah. They lived on campus and earned their room and board by assisting the school staff with the students. Duties such as assistant dorm attendents, assistant coaches, study guides or whatever else was needed.

In the fall of 1957, Marvin looking for a project, approached Supt. Diamond Roach about creating a school yearbook as a way to increase school spirit and school pride. Diamond approved the idea and seed money was made available for a camera, film and other supplies. A yearbook committee was quickly organized with Marvin as the sponsor. The result was the 1958 Sequoyan and the tradition has continued right up to the 2014 Sequoyan.

Marvin may not have been an alumni, but he was a member of our Sequoyah family.
