SEMINOLE, OK -- Ostie Jane (Merritt) Harjo , (Seq. Jr. 1970) 63, Wewoka resident, died Tuesday, March 22, 2016 in Wetumka, Oklahoma. Ostie was born July 28, 1952 in Wewoka to Wesley Green Sr. and Cora Mae (Lena) Green. She grew up in Wewoka, where she lived most of her life. She attended Justice Schools, New Lima Schools and Sequoyah High School in Tahlequah.
Ostie was a homemaker and was a member of the Sand Creek Eufaula Baptist Church, southwest of Wewoka, Oklahoma, where she was baptized in 1966 by Rev. Joe Tiger. She was a very humble and kind-hearted Woman. She would give people the last of any money she had and would feed anyone who was hungry. Ostie was a proud tribal member of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma.
She is survived by five sons; Mose Merritt of Wetumka, Oklahoma, Edmond Harjo of Ada, Oklahoma, Clifford Harjo of Wewoka, Oklahoma, Charlie Harjo of Atoka, Oklahoma, Isaiah Harjo of McAlester, Oklahoma, one daughter Yahnah Factor of Seminole, Oklahoma; three brothers Billy Merritt (Seq.Class of 1975) of Seminole, Oklahoma, Wesley Green, Jr., and Oscar Bunner both of Wewoka, Oklahoma; four sisters Kizzie Wildcat of Wetumka, Oklahoma, Vanessa Green of Wewoka, Oklahoma, Linda Merrit Martin (Seq. Jr.'71) of Seminole, Oklahoma and Mary Woods of Maud, Oklahoma; twelve grandchildren; Mark Factor, Jr., Gabriella Factor, Gaylen, Brad, Zachary and Addison Merritt, Akeeyah, Bryce, Christopher Ray, Jr., and Raylee Merritt, Chandra Stewart and Alyssa Buck and many nieces and nephews.
Ostie was preceded in death by her parents; a son Christopher Merritt, Maternal grandparents Charley and Winey (Joshua) Lena, Paternal Grandparents Ena and Annie (Harjo) Green, a brother Charles Ray Merritt (Seq. Class of 1967), two great nephews and two great nieces, family and friends.
Funeral services were Saturday, March 26 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole with Rev. Houston Tiger officiating. Burial followed at the Fixico-Lena Family Cemetery, south of Wewoka.
Wake services were Friday evening, March 25, at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel.
Casket bearers were: Mel Lena, Muskoke Yargee, Justin Patton, Russell Daniels, Tom Culberson, Jr., and Hunter Woods. Honorary bearers were: Justin Wildcat, Mark Factor, Tommy Culberson and Rick Woods.
