Marie Benge McCarty

OWASSO, Ok -- Marie Benge McCarty , was born April 3, 1914 in Braggs Okla., to John and Eliza Pettit Benge. She passed away at the age of 94 on Wednesday Oct 22, 2008 in Tulsa, Okla.
She attended Sequoyah Orphan Training School , which was later named Sequoyah Vocational School , Tahlequah, Okla. She was a member of the first senior class to graduate, the Class of 1934. She received her Bachelors Degree at Southeastern State College, Durant, Okla. She received her Masters Degree at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Okla.
While at Durant she met and married Jack McCarty. They taught for the Bureau of Indian Affairs at Santa Fe and Albuquerque, N.M. After moving back to Oklahoma, they taught at Jones Academy in Hartshorne, Sequoyah Vocational School in Tahlequah and Chilocco Indian School in Newkirk.
The McCartys returned to Sequoyah in about 1949; she as an elementry teacher (5th grade) and he was the Principal during those years. They left when Jack became the Superintendent of Chilocco in the fall of 1953.
Marie and Jack had three children: Jack De McCarty, an attorney in New Kirk, Okla, Buddy McCarty, a State Farm Insurance Agent in Owasso, Okla. and Christine McCarty, a special education teacher in Stroud, Okla.
Marie was a member of the Cherokee Nation and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Owasso, Okla.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters (Betsy Benge-Seq.Cls'35) , one granddaughter and her beloved husband Jack McCarty (Mar 5, 1996).
She leaves her three children, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Marie was loved by all who knew her and her passing will leave an emptiness in the hearts of many.
Services were Monday, Oct. 27, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church of Owasso. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Moore Funeral Home.
