Levi Gritts Sr. was born April 9, 1923, in (Pumpkin Hollow), Tahlequah, to Charles and Ollie (Terrapin) Gritts. He departed this life on May 3, 2011, at the age of 88.

Levi attended classes at  Sequoyah Orphan Training School  (now Sequoyah High School).

At 17, he falsified his age and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served 20 years. During his enlisted years, he served during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Levi served an additional 10 years in the naval reserves.

After his active service time, Levi worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs for 20 years (Sequoyah boys dorm attendant 1964 - 81) . Once Levi retired, he enjoyed fishing and playing chauffeur to his grandchildren. He was a great storyteller and would often talk of his service time.

Levi would entertain his family with his humor, which will be greatly missed by them all. He loved his children and grandchildren, and cherished the time he could spend with them.

Levi is preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Ogle) Gritts; sons Mark Allen Gritts, and Levi Gritts Jr.; parents Charley and Ollie; and a grandson, Justin Pigeon.

He is survived by his four daughters, Sandra Merrill and husband Larry of Gans, Cynthia Humphries of Austin, Texas, Karen Ryder of Tahlequah, and LuAnn Brown of Wagoner; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives, friends, and loved ones too numerous to mention. Levi will be missed by all who knew him.
