Former Sequoyah High School athlete dies

Funeral services are pending for a former Sequoyah High School athlete who died Saturday in a Tulsa hospital.

Garrett Drapeau, a 2009 graduate of Sequoyah who played both football and basketball, died of a rare form of leukemia at a Tulsa hospital, according to athletic director Larry Grigg, who told the Muskogee Phoenix.

Drapeau was a quarterback on a state quarterfinalist in Class 2A in 2008 and a key member of the Indians’ basketball squad that lost to Okemah in the Class 3A semifinals in 2009.

He is the second Sequoyah quarterback in the last decade to lose his life.  Chad Stevens, a 2004 graduate who led the Indians to their first district championship in a half-century in 2002, died in an automobile accident in May 2005.

“Garrett was a quiet kid with a good work ethic,” Sequoyah football coach Brent Scott said.  “When he came in behind Nathan Stanley (now at the University of Mississippi) he could have decided to play somewhere else but didn’t and waited for his opportunity.  He was very competitive.”

Grigg, who was Drapeau’s head coach but now serves as an assistant, echoed Scott’s remarks.

“He was a real quiet person.  He didn’t say a lot but he was a competitor that hated to fail.  He sometimes was his own worst enemy because he’d get mad at himself but that was the competitor in him.

“It’s just a shame when a kid loses his life early.”
