Billy Gene "Bear" Blackfox
TAHLEQUAH - Billy Gene Blackfox, affectionately known to friends and family as "Bear," went to be with the Lord on Aug. 16, 2005, at the "young" age of 59.
Bear was born on Nov. 26, 1945, in Tahlequah, to Josie and William Blackfox. He was a dedicated employee of Northeastern State University and was recently honored with a plaque for 35 years of service.
He was a lifelong resident of Tahlequah, growing up in the Briggs community. When he wasn't in the woods hiding, he attended grade school at Briggs School and went on to attend school at Wyandote Boarding and Sequoyah High School. (NOTE: A Junior in the 1965 Sequoyah yearbook.)
He was a faithful member of Elm Tree Baptist Church and could always be found sitting on the front pew with a huge smile on his face every Sunday morning.
Bear was a friend to all and had a sense of humor that was unmatched. He had a nickname for everyone he met and was the most caring person you could ever meet. He was always willing to lend a hand and was the first to offer help when help was needed. He will be sorely missed by many, especially by those who knew him best and loved him most.
He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Josie (McLemore) Blackfox; his sister, Lorene Blackfox; and his brother, Robert Blackfox (Sr.~ '68).
He leaves behind a loving family of one brother and three sisters: Thurman Blackfox (jr '68) and wife Gina of Hulbert, Corene Alaniz and husband Arnold of Mesquite, Texas, Jeananna Blackfox Hendricks(Cls'71) of Tahlequah and Cynthia Blackfox of Dallas. And his favorites of all were his great nieces and nephews: Tyler Guthrie, Cole Guthrie, Kaci Conner, Kylie Guthrie, Summer Lee, Garrett Overturf, Peyton Alaniz, Jarrett Hendricks, Kinsley Blackfox and Carson Conner. He also leaves behind his church family at Elm Tree Baptist Church and numerous extended relatives and friends.
