Alfred Berrryhill     OKMULGEE, Ok --  Alfred Logan Berryhill ,  longtime Okmulgee resident, died Saturday, August 31, 2013 in Okmulgee at the age of 66. Alfred was born March 7, 1947 in Tahlequah to Togo Micco and Lilly Bell (Starr) Berryhill.

    Alfred graduated from Sequoyah High School in Tahlequah with the Class of 1965. Alfred attended Haskell University, Northeastern State University and Oklahoma State University, majoring in business administration. He also served in the Marine Corp Reserve.

    Alfred was former Second Chief of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and was the manager of the Cultural Preservation Department. As Second Chief, Alfred served as chairman of the Tribal Trade and Commerce Board, and the Muscogee Nation Business Enterprise Board. He also served on the Claremore Indian Hospital Board, Okmulgee Creek Council House Board, Five Civilized Tribes Museum Board, and the Festival Committee Board.

    Alfred also served as the administrative inter (Economic Development) Bureau of Indian Affairs, Washington D.C.; member of the Board of Trustees, Tallahassee Church, assistant treasurer, Tallahassee Church; member of Diabetes Advisory Board; secretary and co-founder of Bearers of the Cross, Inc.; and the former administrative assistant, Okmulgee Indian Health Center.

    Alfred spoke, read, wrote and sang in Mvskoke and was a deacon/ exhorter and served as a minister for many years at the Tallahassee Indian Methodist Church, the church his father once pastored. He enjoyed singing Creek Hymns and studying the Creek History.

    He belonged to the alligator clan and his tribal town was Arbeka. His father was of the deer clan.

    Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Veronica Scott, a grandson, Andrew Berryhill and a niece. He is survived by his son, Gregory Allen Berryhill and wife Sherry, two grandsons, Kenneth and Nicholas Berryhill, all of Okmulgee, a brother, Bob Cyril King and wife Anna of Tulsa, a sister, Emily Rose King of Sapulpa and numerous other relatives and friends.

    A wake service will be held 6:00 P.M. Wednesday evening at the Tallahassee Indian Methodist Church officiated by Reverend David Dunson.

    A funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, September 5, 2013 at the Tallahassee Indian Methodist Church with Reverends Sammy Chupco  (Seq. Cls'66) and Paul Fixico officiating. Interment will follow in the Tallahassee Cemetery.

    Casketbearers will be Tom Harjo, Paul Harjo (Seq. Cls'73) , Sam Harjo, Jr., Leo Hicks, Darryl Tiger, Eddie Lowe, James Whitecloud, and Virgil Wayne Harry. Honorary casketbearers will be James Starr, Raymond Smith, Howard Smith, Raymond Rash  (Seq.Stud.1950s) , Joseph “Jokie” Pope, Freeland "Butch" Powell  (Seq. Cls'64) , Butch LaSarge and Herman Harjo.
